ASUU appeals to Nigerians to join them Reject FG's Master-slave posture on labor matters, others.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is calling on the public to hold the Federal Government accountable for any disruptions in universities due to their illogical actions and insensitivities.

Comrade Prof. Dani Mammam, the Adamawa State Zonal Coordinator, made the call in a statement to newsmen.

He recalled that on October 20, 2022, the Union suspended an eight-month-old strike because of a court order.

According to him, the strike was to compel the FGN to implement the memorandum of action (MoA) of February 7, 2019, which the government had disregarded.

The union is calling on all well-meaning patriotic Nigerians, the media, labor movements, student organizations, and civil society groups to join forces with ASUU in rejecting the government's master-slave posture on labor matters and unionism.

Mammam noted that ASUU is in a patriotic struggle to reposition the Nigerian University system. All these threats and violations of the law are signposts to crisis in our Universities.

Mamma explained that University Autonomy is the degree of self-governance necessary for effective decision-making by universities concerning academic work standards, management, and related activities consistent with systems of public accountability, especially concerning funding provided by the state, and in respect to academic freedom and human rights.

Unfortunately, successive governments have tried fervently to subvert the University Autonomy, thereby threatening the gains of the ASUU struggle in several respects, especially as it relates to Academic Freedom.

One of the serious incursions was the introduction of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), now called the "New IPPIS." Another affront to the University's Autonomy was the unilateral dissolubility of the Governing Councils in violation of the University (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1993, Amendment Act 2003, and 2012.

The imposition of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) on the Universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is a usurpation of the authority of University senators who are traditionally responsible for curriculum development and modification.

The Union's rejection of the CCMAS is in line with the University's global best practice.

ASUU members have been on the same salary for more than 15 years, and the last time their salaries were reviewed was in 2009. Nigerian academics are the worst paid in the world, as a graduate assistant earns as low as $70 per month while a professor at a bar earns less than $240 per month.

Therefore, the ASUU urges the FGN to immediately sign and implement the memorandum of action (MoA) of February 7, 2019, and restore the autonomy of Nigerian universities.

They also called on all stakeholders to support their patriotic struggle to reposition the Nigerian university system.
