Abuja, Nigeria – Senator Abubakar Halilu Girei has called on #Endbadgovernance protesters to suspend their nationwide demonstrations and give the federal government until the end of the year to address their concerns. In a statement released on Thursday, the APC chieftain acknowledged that the protests have successfully prompted the government to begin implementing policies that are more responsive to the needs of the people.

"The agitation leading up to the protests has awakened the government to its responsibilities, resulting in the implementation of people-friendly policies that are already making a positive impact," Girei said.

He highlighted several government actions that have been taken in response to the protests, including tax waivers on imported food items, addressing the minimum wage issue, signing the minimum wage act into law, providing incentives to farmers, and offering various palliatives.

"The latest stance by Civil Society Organizations and other key stakeholders to hold #Endhunger/Badgovernance protests is already a success because it has, for the first time on record, prodded the leadership to become responsive to the yearnings and concerns of the masses. This has precipitated swift actions, changes, and reforms by the government," he added.

Girei urged the protesters to recognize the success of their efforts and allow the government time to continue implementing necessary changes. He stressed that the government appears to be working diligently to address the issues raised by the protesters and that there is a need for a sustainable solution.

He also called on the government to maintain its momentum in implementing policies that benefit the people, particularly in the areas of social security, security personnel welfare, corruption in procurement processes, and the rejuvenation of the national currency. He emphasized the importance of reviving grounded refineries, overhauling the NNPCL, and addressing corruption within the oil industry.

Furthermore, Girei proposed additional measures, such as incentivizing the agricultural sector through a supplementary budget of one trillion naira, and allocating another two trillion naira to tackle security challenges, including the establishment of state police.

"The government should also complete the implementation of the 'Oronsaye Report' to rationalize MDAs and reduce the cost of governance," he concluded.

Senator Girei's call for a pause in the protests reflects his belief that the government is now more responsive and committed to addressing the pressing issues facing the nation. He hopes that by giving the government additional time, the necessary reforms can be fully realized, leading to a better future for all Nigerians.
