ASUU MODIBBO ADAMA UNIVERSITY BRANCH COMMENCED TWO WEEK WARNING STRIKE.
By Alhassan Haladu Yola.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Modibbo Adama University (MAU) Yola branch, has commenced a two-week warning strike in compliance with the directive of the union’s national body over unresolved demands with the Federal Government.
The Chairperson of ASUU, MAU Yola branch, Comrade Modibbo Muhammed Buba, disclosed this in a statement issued shortly after the union’s congress held at the university.
According to Comrade Buba, the media interaction became necessary for two main reasons — to brief the public on the state of the union’s engagement with the Federal Government concerning outstanding issues, and to clarify the notice of action issued by the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU on 29th September 2025.
He said the NEC meeting had expressed concern over the Federal Government’s neglect of the university system and its persistent refusal to meet the union’s longstanding demands. Consequently, the NEC issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government to address the issues, but the government failed to act, leaving the union with no option but to embark on the current two-week warning strike.
The unresolved issues, according to the statement, include:
Conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-Federal Government Agreement.
Release of withheld three and a half months’ salaries.
Sustainable funding and revitalization of public universities.
End to the victimization of lecturers in LASU, KSU (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), FUTO, and other institutions.
Payment of 25–35 percent salary arrears and promotion arrears spanning over four years.
Release of withheld third-party deductions, including cooperative contributions and union check-off dues.
The statement further revealed that the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, had appealed to the union to withdraw its 14-day ultimatum, acknowledging ASUU’s patience and understanding throughout the prolonged renegotiation process, which has dragged on for over eight years.
However, ASUU expressed disappointment that government representatives, despite repeated promises, have failed to present any tangible offer to the union. “Why would a government that has been in talks with the union for over a year through its negotiating team now choose to delay action?” the statement queried.
Comrade Buba added that the union viewed the government’s handling of the negotiation as a demonstration of bad faith, stressing that discarding the draft agreement reached with its representatives only worsens the situation.
He maintained that ASUU remains committed to defending the integrity and sustainability of Nigeria’s public universities.
