Federal Government, Stakeholders Urged to Boost Support for Agricultural Biotechnology

The Director of Agricultural Biotechnology of Nigeria, Dr. Rose Maxwell Gidado, has called on the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to give maximum support to the agricultural biotechnology sector in order to improve seed quality and boost farming activities across the country.
Speaking in a phone interview with Radio Nigeria Fombina FM Yola, Dr. Gidado emphasized that adequate funding is critical for promoting biotechnology initiatives that can transform the nation’s agricultural sector.
According to her, agricultural biotechnology — through the introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) — has the potential to provide farmers with improved seeds that will enhance productivity, withstand climate challenges, and strengthen Nigeria’s food security.
“Due to climate change, we are introducing GMO seeds that can persevere through drought during the rainy season,” Dr. Gidado explained. “These seeds will help farmers develop their activities, boost economic growth, and create employment opportunities for the youth.”
She urged farmers nationwide to embrace GMOs, noting that they play a key role in enhancing the economic system, ensuring sustainable food production, and reducing youth unemployment.
Dr. Gidado also appealed to all agricultural stakeholders to prioritize agricultural development as a way of creating jobs, promoting peace, and ensuring Nigeria can feed its population — now over 250 million — without relying on food imports.
Meanwhile, some farmers in Adamawa State, including Abdulrazak Abubakar and Muhammed Saleh Gwalan, expressed gratitude to the agricultural biotechnology sector for its efforts toward developing the nation’s agricultural system.
