Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has charged newly trained forest guards to discharge their duties with professionalism and avoid intimidating or harassing peace-loving members of the public.

The governor gave the charge at the graduation ceremony of 987 forest guards held at General Murtala Mohammed College (GMMC), Yola. He was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa George Farauta.

Governor Fintiri urged the graduates to see themselves as privileged citizens called to serve their communities and the nation, stressing that their training should be used to protect lives, property and the environment, rather than for abuse of authority.

Professor Farauta commended the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for coordinating and supervising the forest guard initiative, describing it as a critical component of efforts to address security challenges linked to forested areas.

She also appealed to members of the public to support and cooperate with forest guards deployed to their communities, noting that community collaboration is essential for the success of the programme.

The governor reaffirmed the Adamawa State Government’s commitment to supporting the initiative.

“On my part, I wish to assure you of the continuous support of the Adamawa State Government for this initiative,” he said, while praying for sustained peace and security in Adamawa State, Nigeria and beyond.

Earlier, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, said the forest guard initiative represents a strategic fusion of environmental protection and national security objectives.

“By protecting forests, we are reclaiming our territory. By reclaiming our territory, we are securing our people and their future,” Ribadu said.

Represented by Colonel E. E. Eswagu, the NSA reaffirmed his office’s unwavering determination to ensure the success of the programme, assuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of its commitment to delivering measurable security, environmental and socio-economic outcomes in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Office of the National Security Adviser also announced the immediate payment of salaries and allowances, as well as the prompt deployment of the graduating forest guards, to enhance operational readiness and boost morale.

The recruitment of forest guards follows a nationwide security emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which included directives for the military and police to recruit additional personnel to strengthen security across the country.
