‎FG, States Urged to Provide Storage Facilities for Onion Farmers ‎

By Alhassan Haladu Yola.

‎The Federal Government, state governments, and other relevant stakeholders have been urged to provide adequate storage facilities for onion farmers across Nigeria to enable them to expand production and reduce post-harvest losses.

‎The National President of the Onion Farmers Association of Nigeria, Aliyu Isa Maitasamu, made the call in an interview with An-Nur Hausa newspaper, where he described the lack of storage facilities as the biggest challenge facing onion farmers in the country.

‎According to him, many farmers suffer huge losses due to poor storage, which discourages large-scale production and affects supply. He stressed that urgent intervention by both the federal and state governments is needed to improve the sector.

‎Aliyu Isa noted that Nigeria is among the leading onion-producing countries, with all states in Northern Nigeria actively involved in onion cultivation. He said the crop deserves greater attention because of its importance to food security and its potential to boost the national economy.

‎He added that the Onion Farmers Association is fully committed to supporting farmers, especially those in rural communities, and encouraged them to report any challenges or irregularities on their farms to relevant authorities for prompt action.

‎The association’s president also called on governments at all levels to provide farmers with essential inputs at subsidized rates to enhance productivity and ensure stable onion supply across the country.

‎He reaffirmed the association’s goal of developing the onion sector to a level where Nigeria can export onions and establish a strong and profitable onion trade.

‎Aliyu Isa further urged youths and women to embrace onion farming as a means of creating jobs and reducing unemployment.

‎He concluded by calling on Nigerians to continue praying for the nation’s leaders, asking for divine guidance in governance and for lasting solutions to the country’s security challenges.
