Taraba State government mraks Olympic Day Run reiterate Commitment to sports development.

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State says his administration will continue to boost sporting activities through the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.



Kefas who was represented by the state Head of Civil Service, Paul Tino disclosed this during the 2024 Olympic Day Run celebration held at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo.






He stated that the event unifies that the state is not left behind in sporting activities.


He noted that it is through such events that young talents would be discovered that will be able to represent the state in all aspects of sporting activities.


"As you are aware sporting activity brings us together irrespective of religion and other differences, to enable them to achieve a common goal.




The Governor commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development under the leadership of Joseph Joshua for its commitment to boosting sporting activities in the state, which is in line with the administration's five-point agenda.


He said marking the Olympic Day Run was a testament that the state has witnessed tremendous improvement within one year.





President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel who was represented by Mr. Jesse Galadima said the day was set aside to celebrate the creation of the Olympic Movement by its founder, Pierre de Coubertin.


Gumel who dabbled as the representative of the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach also described this year's Olympic Day as special as the Olympic Games Paris 2024 is around the corner




Additionally, Engr. Habu Gumel pointed out that "The very first Olympic Games with full gender parity. The very first Olympic Games is fully in line with our Olympic Agenda.


Furthermore, he expressed hope that "In Paris, the athletes will inspire us with their achievements - they will inspire the world by living our Olympic motto: Faster, Higher, Stronger -Together.


The NOC President, however, expressed optimism that the State Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Joseph Joshua will be part of the Paris trip.


Earlier in an address of welcome, the State Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Joseph Joshua said the event marks not just a celebration of sports but a sense of collective commitment to health, unity, and sportsmanship.





He noted that the Olympic Run Day is more than just a race but a symbol of hope, perseverance, and excellence, adding that it reminds people of the incredible power of sports to transcend boundaries, bring them together, and foster peace and understanding.


In an interview, the Chairman House Committee on Sports and Member representing Karim Lamido II Constituency at the Taraba State House of Assembly (APGA), Anas Shu'aibu described the event as a testament to Governor Kefas's commitment to development and youth empowerment.


Also speaking to newsmen, the state Director of the Sports Council, George Shitta appreciated Governor Agbu Kefas for his support and being a sports lover, and also acknowledged the support of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).


Shitta continues to commend the athletes and other sports lovers who participated in the exercise and called for all hands to be on deck for sports development in the state.
