Autonomy of academic institutions must be safeguarded ASUU Yola zone tells FG.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Yola Zone wants has expressed concern about the unfair treatment its members are facing.

A statement signed by Professor Dani Mamman in Yola, Adamawa state emphasized that the union has designated 10th September 2024 as a day to show solidarity to ASUU Victimized Lecturers throughout the country, specifically focusing on those in the aforementioned universities. ASUU firmly believes that an injury to one is an injury to all.

"It seems that our members are being victimized without justifiable reasons, simply for standing up for the truth.

"This situation is particularly noticeable in universities such as Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Lagos State University (LASU), Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma (AAUE), Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) formerly known as Kogi State University (KSU), and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam.

"Our members are facing psychological trauma and various forms of victimization, including physical assault, dismissal from service, denial of promotion, hindrance of union activities, suspension from duty and statutory meetings, nonpayment of promotion arrears, deliberate seizure of salaries, and non-remittance of third party deductions, among other issues.

"The unilateral sacking or dismissal of union members for participating in union activities during the 2021 national strike, along with the unjust withholding of their salaries, not only violates their fundamental human rights but also sets a dangerous precedent for the future of higher education in Nigeria.

"It is indeed troubling that some vice-chancellors are complying with the visitors' demands, potentially due to their improper appointment processes. Members who refuse to bow to the wrongdoings of university management are unfairly targeted.

"ASUU Yola Zone demands the immediate reinstatement of all unfairly dismissed union members and the timely payment of their withheld salaries.

"We are calling on the Federal Government, the National Assembly, and all relevant stakeholders to decisively intervene and stop this unfair treatment, and restore normalcy to our universities. The autonomy of academic institutions must be safeguarded," the statement emphasized and concluded.
