Adamawa Govt Orders Swift Relief Intervention for Yola Flood Victims

By Abubakar Ibrahim Yola.

Adamawa State Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa G. Farauta has visited flood-affected communities in Shagari and Yolde Pate within Yola South Local Government Area, where torrential rains lasting over 10 hours led to the deaths of two people and widespread destruction of homes and farmlands.

During her visit to the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, where some of the injured victims are receiving treatment, Professor Farauta expressed shock at the extent of the devastation.

She directed the immediate provision of temporary shelters, food, clothing, and medical supplies to the affected individuals, emphasizing the government’s commitment to alleviating their suffering.

“We woke up to a terrible flood that has claimed two lives and left many injured. The government is deeply saddened by the losses and is mobilizing all necessary support to assist the victims,” she stated.

Dr. Yusuf Nuhu of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit confirmed the casualty figures and reported that those hospitalized are responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, the Head of Operations for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ladan Ayuba, identified reluctance among some residents to evacuate their homes due to fears of looting as a major challenge hindering rescue efforts.

One of the victims, Aliyu Mustapha, lamented the loss of his means of livelihood and reported that some children remain missing after the floodwaters swept through their neighborhood.

The state government, in collaboration with federal agencies and emergency response units, is working to intensify rescue operations and deliver urgent aid to mitigate the disaster’s impact.
