By Alhassan Haladu Yola.
As the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, parents, stakeholders, and governments at all levels have been urged to intensify efforts toward protecting girls from all forms of violence and abuse.
The call was made by the Amirah of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Adamawa State Chapter, Hajiya Khadija Buba, while speaking with journalists in Yola.
Hajiya Khadija noted that girls continue to face numerous challenges within society and emphasized the need for communities to safeguard them from anything that could endanger or destroy their future.
She urged parents to ensure their daughters are enrolled in school to acquire both Western and Islamic education, which she said are vital for their personal growth and societal development.
The FOMWAN leader also appealed to stakeholders and all tiers of government to work closely to create a safe environment where girls can live peacefully and achieve their full potential.
In addition, Hajiya Khadija called on education stakeholders to make concerted efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children, stressing that education is key to development and peaceful coexistence in society.
She further explained that the United Nations set aside October 11 every year to mark the International Day of the Girl Child, aimed at highlighting the challenges girls face globally and finding solutions to address them.
