MAUTH Yola Records Sixth Successful Separation of Conjoined Twins

The Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, has recorded another sixth medical surgery with the successful separation of conjoined twins. The complex surgical procedure, carried out by a team of specialists, marks the sixth successful operation of its kind at the hospital.
The conjoined twins, who were born attached at the abdomen, underwent a successful three-hour separation surgery performed by a thirty-five-member medical team at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola.
Head of the surgical team and former Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Auwal Abubakar, said the twins were brought to the hospital from Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State after complications were discovered at birth.
Professor Abubakar explained that the babies were kept under close medical observation and detailed research for several months before doctors decided to proceed with the separation surgery.
According to him, the availability of modern medical equipment and the expertise of the surgical team contributed significantly to the success of the procedure.
The separated twins have now been moved to the Intensive Care Unit, where they are receiving close monitoring as the affected parts of their bodies gradually heal.
Professor Abubakar also commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, for supporting the establishment of the hospital’s Centre of Excellence, which provided the state-of-the-art facilities used during the operation. He added that the surgery was conducted free of charge for the family.
In his part The Director of Research and Development Centre of Excellence of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Dr. Salihu Bakari Girei, has commended the team of surgeons at the Pediatrics Centre of the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, for successfully carrying out a complex surgery to separate conjoined twins.
In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Adamu G. Bakari, assured the public that the facility remains open and accessible to people seeking quality healthcare services.
He said the Federal Government has continued to equip the hospital with modern medical facilities to enhance service delivery, adding that proper maintenance of the equipment will remain a priority.
Speaking after the operation, the father of the twins, Shuaibu Jibrin, expressed appreciation to the hospital management and medical team for the support given to his family.
Jibrin said the twins were delivered through a caesarean section at Jatau Health Facility in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, but the delivery came with complications and his wife sadly died during childbirth.
He added that medical personnel later advised him to take the babies to the teaching hospital in Yola for proper care, where they have been receiving free medical attention for the past five months.
Our correspondent reports that the surgical procedure was also televised live by the hospital’s Public Relations Unit for selected staff, invited journalists and a limited number of members of the public.
The successful operation further strengthens the reputation of the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital as a leading medical centre for specialised healthcare services in the region.
