The Director of Research and Development Centre of Excellence of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Dr. Salihu Bakari Girei, has commended the team of surgeons at the Paediatrics Centre of the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, for successfully carrying out a complex surgery to separate conjoined twins.
Dr. Girei who represented the Executive Secretary of TETFUND Mr Sunny Echono, gave the commendation on Monday while visiting the centre to inspect ongoing projects funded by TETFund at the hospital in Yola.
Speaking shortly after witnessing the surgery, Dr. Girei said the establishment and funding of the Centre of Excellence by TETFund was aimed at ensuring that Nigerians receive quality medical care within the country, without the need to travel abroad for specialised treatment.
He explained that the intervention was also designed to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s healthcare system and strengthen the capacity of local hospitals to handle highly specialised procedures.
Dr. Girei, who spoke with journalists after the successful completion of the surgery, praised the surgeons, medical personnel, and the management of MAUTH for their professionalism and dedication.
He also commended the parents of the conjoined twins for their patience, resilience, and commitment throughout the process, describing their courage as inspiring.
According to him, TETFund has invested over ₦3 billion in the construction and equipping of the Paediatrics Centre of Excellence at MAUTH to enhance specialised medical services in the region.
He added that an additional ₦500 million was released to the centre this year to support more impactful projects aimed at improving healthcare delivery.
Dr. Girei expressed optimism that the centre would not only serve the people of Adamawa State and the North-East region but also provide specialised medical services to patients across Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is a federal government intervention agency established to provide supplementary support to public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The agency funds infrastructure development, research, academic staff training, and the establishment of specialised centres of excellence to strengthen education and research in the country.
Dr Girei also commended the chief Medical Director of Modibbo Adamawa University Teaching Hospital under whose leadership, the successful surgery was carried out.
The successful separation surgery is expected to further position the Paediatrics Centre at MAUTH as a leading medical facility for advanced child healthcare and specialised surgical procedures in the region.
