Adamawa Women Protest Exclusion from APC Primaries

Women in Adamawa State have expressed concern over what they described as their total exclusion from the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections for state and national assembly positions.

Chairperson of the Association of Adamawa Women in Politics, Mrs. Comfort Ibrahim Ezrah, who voiced the concern, said the role of women in political development cannot be overemphasized.

According to her, women and youths remain the driving force behind political growth and democratic development, stressing the need for their inclusion in all political activities and decision-making processes.

Comfort Ibrahim Ezrah called on critical stakeholders to address what the group described as injustice, selfishness, and violation of women’s political rights during the exercise. She lamented that the outcome of the primaries suggests that only men would dominate leadership positions at both the state and national assemblies.

She, however, commended women across the state for their loyalty, patriotism, and active participation in political activities, and appealed to the Governor of Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to appoint more women into sensitive government positions as compensation for their exclusion.

The group also urged political leaders and stakeholders to adopt gender-friendly policies that would give women equal opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic and political development of the state.

Mrs. Ezrah further encouraged women in the state to remain courageous, united, and determined towards becoming politically and economically relevant.

The association equally appealed to government at all levels to respond positively to the aspirations of women by ensuring their active participation in governance and leadership.
