ASUU Urges Federal Government to Honour Agreements to Prevent Disruption in Universities
By Alhassan Haladu Yola.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to urgently fulfill all promises and agreements reached with the union in order to avoid further disruption in the education sector.
The ASUU Zonal Chairperson at the Modibbo Adama University branch in Yola, Comrade Modibbo Muhammed Buba, made the call while speaking to journalists after a meeting of the union’s leadership.
He explained that following deliberations held at the university in Yola, the union observed that the Federal Government has been slow in implementing agreements previously reached with ASUU, a situation which, according to him, has continued to affect the progress and development of universities across Nigeria.
ASUU also expressed concern over the government’s reported plan to suspend certain courses, including language and cultural studies. The union maintained that many lecturers and students depend on such disciplines for their academic and professional pursuits, stressing that it would not accept any move to scrap them.
The union further appealed to parents and students to support its struggle, emphasizing that its actions are aimed at improving the standard of education and advancing the growth of universities in the country.
Comrade Modibbo Muhammed Buba added that the union has not yet received any fresh response from the Federal Government and is awaiting the next step, depending on whether the agreements will be honored or whether ASUU will decide on a new course of action.
