DEPUTY SENATE PRESIDENT BACKS STATE POLICE, FOR IMPROVED SECURITY.
By Bamanga Abdullahi Gombi Yola.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposal to establish State Police is a welcome step that will help reduce insecurity in Nigeria.
Speaking on Radio Nigeria Kaduna’s Hausa programme, "Hannu Da Yawa", on Saturday, Senator Barau said the initiative is aimed at strengthening the country’s security architecture.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President said the bill underwent extensive consultations.
Public hearings were held across the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Stakeholders involved included the Presidency, the National Assembly, the Nigeria Police Force, Governors, and civil society groups.
Senator Barau explained that the proposed law contains safeguards to prevent governors or any individual from misusing State Police for political or ethnic purposes.
He noted that State Police will complement the Nigeria Police Force and will not replace it, stressing that Officers will be recruited from local communities, which he said will improve response time to crime.
“This will help us respond faster to banditry, kidnapping and other crimes,” he said.
The Deputy Senate President added that the North stands to benefit significantly because the plan targets areas worst hit by insecurity.
On oversight, he said the President has constitutional powers to direct the Federal Police to take over if any State Police is used to harass citizens.
Under the proposal, the Nigeria Police Force will continue to handle terrorism, cybercrime and other national security issues, while State Police will focus on internal security and public order within states.
Senator Barau further stated that State Police Commanders will be appointed through a transparent process and protected by law from political interference, adding that financial and training frameworks will be developed to support their operations.
He urged Nigerians and state Houses of Assembly to support the constitutional amendment to bring policing closer to the people.
