The Commission, she stated, has an important responsibility to monitor and promote compliance with human rights standards, receive and examine complaints of alleged violations, undertake appropriate interventions within its mandate, and promote awareness of fundamental human rights. The AIG reaffirmed the Police commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for fundamental human rights and the rule of law in the discharge of its constitutional and statutory responsibilities.
He emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force has a fundamental responsibility to investigate allegations and establish the facts surrounding reported cases before taking appropriate legal action.
AIG Agans-Irabor further explained that proper investigation is essential to ensuring that cases presented before the courts are supported by credible facts and evidence, while safeguarding the rights of all parties involved in the criminal justice process.
He noted that effective policing requires cooperation with relevant institutions and stakeholders, particularly organizations with mandates relating to human rights, justice and accountability.
The AIG therefore welcomed continued dialogue and institutional collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the National Human Rights Commission, noting that such partnership would contribute to strengthening public confidence, improving accountability mechanisms and promoting a justice system that protects the rights of all persons.
The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to continued cooperation, information sharing, constructive engagement and the promotion of human rights and justice in Nigeria.
